From Giveaway to Experience: Why Brand Activations Are Changing Promotional Products

Promotional products have always been an effective way to put a brand into someone’s hands. But as the promotional products industry continues to evolve, brands are finding new ways to make those products more meaningful. Instead of simply handing someone a branded item, more organizations are creating experiences that encourage people to interact with the brand. That is where brand activations come in.

A brand activation is an experience designed to get people actively involved with a brand. It can take many forms, from product customization and interactive games to photo opportunities and hands-on activities. The idea is to move beyond simply giving someone a promotional product and create an experience they will actually remember.

What Makes a Brand Activation Different?

Consider the difference between being handed a branded tumbler and getting to choose your own tumbler, personalize it, or participate in an activity surrounding it. The product may be similar, but the experience creates a different connection with the brand.

That interaction is what makes a brand activation stand out. Instead of simply receiving SWAG, people have a reason to stop, participate, make a choice, and spend a little more time engaging with the brand. The promotional product becomes part of the experience rather than simply being the takeaway.

And a brand activation doesn't have to be complicated or expensive to be effective. Sometimes, it can be as simple as giving people an opportunity to choose their own products or create something that feels personal to them.

Putting the Idea Into Practice at Our UA Showcase

We recently had the opportunity to put this idea into practice at our University of Arizona Showcase with our Build Your SWAG Bag experience.

Rather than putting promotional products on a table and inviting attendees to take one, we gave each person a bag and invited them to build their own collection of SWAG. They could look through the different products, choose the items they were most interested in, and create a bag that was uniquely theirs.

What started as a simple giveaway became something much more interactive. Attendees spent time looking at the products, talking with our team, and deciding what they wanted to take with them. The products were still the takeaway, but the process of choosing them became part of the experience.

That is the value of an activation. The product is important, but the experience surrounding it can make it more memorable.

Why Experiences Matter

Promotional products are most effective when they have a purpose. A useful item can keep a brand in front of someone long after an event ends, but connecting that item to a positive experience can give it even more meaning.

For an event organizer, that could mean creating a hands-on activity that gets attendees talking. For an employer, it might mean allowing employees to personalize a recognition gift. For a school or university, it could mean creating an interactive experience for students, families, alumni, or prospective students.

The possibilities are really only limited by the audience and the goal.

And the activation itself doesn't have to be the biggest attraction at an event. It simply needs to give people a reason to engage. Sometimes, taking a familiar promotional product and presenting it in a more interactive way is enough to turn a giveaway into an experience.

SWAG Can Be More Than a Giveaway

At Garment Graphics, we have always believed that SWAG should have a purpose. It should help an organization accomplish something, whether that means recruitment, recognition, rewards, reputation, or retention.

Brand activations build on that idea by giving SWAG another role. It can be useful and memorable, while also becoming part of the experience an organization creates for its audience.

Our Build Your SWAG Bag table at the UA Showcase was a simple example of what that can look like. We took a collection of promotional products and turned them into an activity that encouraged people to participate, make their own choices, and spend time interacting with our team.

As brand activations continue to grow, we expect to see even more creative ways for organizations to use promotional products to connect with their audiences. Because sometimes, the best SWAG isn't just something you give someone. It's something they get to experience.
