We have a calendar for everything. Our phones tell us when the meeting starts. Our computers remind us about deadlines. Shared digital calendars keep entire teams organized. So why do people still want something they can hang on a wall or keep on their desk?
Because sometimes, physical is better.
The Case for Putting It on Paper
Writing something down isn't just an old-school habit. Research has found that taking notes by hand can encourage deeper processing than typing, suggesting that the act of writing can help people engage with and process information differently.
A calendar works in much the same way. Instead of disappearing behind a notification or another open tab, it stays visible.
You can glance at it from across the room. Circle an important date. Write down a reminder. Cross something off.
It's simple—and that's part of the appeal.
People Still Use Printed Calendars
The idea that printed calendars have gone away with the rise of smartphones isn't exactly true.
A workplace calendar study cited by PPAI found that 8 out of 10 respondents had a printed calendar at work, and 79% enjoyed receiving calendars as a complimentary gift. Wall calendars were the most common format, followed by desk calendars.
In other words, digital calendars haven't necessarily replaced physical calendars. For many people, they work together.
Your phone can tell you when something is happening. A physical calendar can keep the whole month—or year—in view.
And That's What Makes Calendars Good Promotional Products
The best promotional products aren't necessarily the flashiest ones. They're the ones people actually use.
PPAI research found that usefulness is the top reason people keep promotional products. In its 2021 consumer study, 75.4% of respondents said they kept promotional products because the item was useful. Dated products, including wall calendars and planners, were among the most commonly received promotional product categories.
More recent PPAI research continues to point to the same basic idea: usefulness and relevance are what make branded merchandise worth keeping.
And a calendar has a built-in advantage: it has a reason to be looked at again and again.
One PPAI article estimates that calendars are used an average of 2.8 times per day in the home and 10 times per day in the workplace.
That's a lot of potential brand exposure from one useful item.
Make Your Brand Part of Their Everyday Routine
A calendar can be a practical client gift, an employee appreciation item, a school giveaway, a donor thank-you, or a way to keep your organization in front of customers throughout the year.
And it doesn't have to look like a generic promotional product.
Choose a format that fits your audience. Add your branding. Incorporate important dates, photos, school events, company milestones or other information your recipients will actually use.
Because when a promotional product becomes part of someone's routine, your brand becomes part of that routine, too.
